How secure is your business information?
Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 2:19PM Surprisingly enough, according to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, the primary causes of weak information security within an organization are apparently very often its own employees, who routinely and sometimes even knowingly violate IT security policies.
Specifically, of the surveyed workers:
- 61% downloaded data onto unsecured mobile devices
- 47% share passwords
- 43% lose data-bearing devices
- 21% turn off their mobile devices' security tools
- 52% use Web-based personal e-mail in the office
- 53% download Internet software onto the organization's devices
- 31% engage in online social networking while in the workplace
Interestingly, of those surveyed, 58% said their employer failed to provide adequate data security awareness and training, and 57% said their employer's data protection policies were ineffective.
